How Does Sports Massage Differ from a Regular Massage?
Sports massage is not just about relaxation. It is a functional therapy tailored to the needs of athletes and active people. The main difference lies in the purpose and intensity. The therapist uses specialized techniques, such as deep tissue massage, trigger point therapy, and stretching elements, to:
Improve Muscle Elasticity
And joint flexibility.
Accelerate Lactic Acid Removal
Helping flush out metabolic waste products from the muscles.
Reduce Muscle Soreness
Helps alleviate Delayed Onset Muscle Soreness (DOMS) after workouts.
Detect and Release Muscle Knots
Identifies tight spots that could otherwise lead to injury.
Three Main Types of Sports Massage
Sports massage can be performed for different purposes, depending on your training cycle.
Pre-Event Massage
Performed before an important competition or intense training session. Goal: To warm up the muscles, increase their elasticity, and prepare the body for maximum performance.
Post-Event (Recovery) Massage
Performed 1–2 hours (or the next day) after heavy physical exertion. Goal: To reduce muscle pain, speed up recovery, and eliminate toxins.
Maintenance Massage
Performed regularly (e.g., once every week or two) during the training cycle. Goal: To maintain good muscle condition and prevent injuries and chronic strain.
Who Else Is Sports Massage For?
This massage is ideal not only for professional athletes. We highly recommend it if:
- You regularly go to the gym, run, swim, or engage in other active pursuits.
- You have a physically demanding job that requires high endurance.
- You feel chronic muscle "stiffness" and want to regain freedom of movement.
- You want to recover faster from minor injuries or strains.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is sports massage painful?
This is an intense massage. When working on tight muscle knots (trigger points), you may feel deep discomfort or even slight pain (“good pain”). This is normal and indicates that the problem is being addressed. However, the therapist always communicates with you and adjusts the pressure level accordingly.
Can I exercise immediately after the massage?
After a deep recovery massage, it is recommended to let your body rest for at least 12–24 hours. After a lighter, pre-event massage, you will feel energetic and ready for action.
How often should I get a sports massage?
The frequency depends on your training load. For active individuals, we recommend visiting 1–2 times per month for maintenance. During an intense competition period, it can be beneficial to visit as often as once a week.
